Free for Kids: Fun Foods from Around the World – Colombian Empanadas

Brattleboro: Each month, Fun Foods focuses on a different country in order to share their food and culture with kids.  Colombia is our featured country for January.  We have chosen Colombia for its rich and diverse culinary traditions, and because it is the birthplace of our own Lizi Rosenberg (BFC Education Outreach Coordinator).  Join Lizi to explore the native foods of Colombia by making soft, pillowy empanadas.  The first will be sweet: filled with cheese and bocadillo (a paste made of guavas and sugar).  The second empanada will be savory: filled with chicken and olives.  While cooking together, kids will learn about the culture and language of Colombia.  In the Brattleboro Food Co-op Cooking Classroom, Canal St. entrance, Thursday, January 31st, 3:30-5pm.  This class is free for all, but you must register: 802-246-2821 or Shareholders@BrattleboroFoodCoop.coop

Free Kids Baking Workshop: Gingerbread Houses

Join Lizi in this class to assemble and decorate your very own traditional Gingerbread House featuring home-made spiced cookies, sweet icing and assorted decorations. Kids will be able to take it home for the holiday season. In the Brattleboro Food Co-op Cooking Classroom, Canal St. entrance, Tuesday, December 18th, 3:30-5pm.  This class is free for all, but you must register: 802-246-2821 or Shareholders@BrattleboroFoodCoop.coop

Sample and Sign-Up!

Meet Lizi, the Brattleboro Food Co-op educator, to learn about the free kid’s cooking classes that are available each month while sampling some foods that we will be preparing in December. Tuesday, December 4th, 3:30-4:30pm, at our Co-op Demo Counter.

Free Kids Project: ART STOP!

Bring the kids to the Brattleboro Co-op to make a quick, seasonal harvest art project at the Demo Counter (located at Cheese Island). Little ones will need an adult to help them with their project; ages 7-10 can work at the counter/table on their own. Facilitators: Linda Whelihan, BMAC Educator, and Lizi Rosenberg, BFC Education Outreach Coordinator.  Wednesday, October 24, 4-5pm

Fun Foods from Around the World: Portugal

Caldo Verdé is a traditional Portuguese soup and the star dish on our culinary journey to Portugal this month. We will make this soup which calls for sausage, potatoes, cabbage and Swiss chard (the Vermont Harvest of the Month vegetable). Don’t worry, we will make a vegetarian version as well, so everyone can enjoy this delicious soup. Kids will be introduced to the culture of this vibrant country and even learn a few words of Portuguese during the class.  In the Brattleboro Food Co-op Cooking Classroom, Canal St. entrance, Thursday, September 20, 3:30-5pm.  This class is free for all, but you must register: 802-246-2821 or Shareholders@BrattleboroFoodCoop.coop
